Throughout my time studying history, I’ve always gravitated towards the post-WWII era in American history. I’ve been fascinated by topics surrounding consumerism, the rise of suburban neighborhoods, and gender roles and dynamics in American society, so when picking a topic for my History 299 class at the University of Mary Washington, I knew I wanted to research and write something about this era in American history. The information you will find on this website explores the idea of advertising reflecting norms and ideals in American society surrounding women and consumerism. I found during my research process that advertising is a little bit of both a reflection and a shaper of American society.
